The National Alliance to Restore Opportunity to the Gulf Coast & Displaced Persons

The devastation inflicted by Hurricane Katrina focused the nation’s attention on the poverty and race problems still challenging our nation. The racially disparate impact of Katrina’s flood waters reflected the vulnerability in many urban areas around the nation where people are separated from the opportunities and resources needed to succeed in life or to withstand the consequences of a natural disaster. The Institute has devoted significant research and advocacy resources to address many of the needs in the Gulf Coast.

The Kirwan Institute was a lead organizer of the National Alliance to Restore Opportunity to the Gulf Coast & Displaced Persons, an inclusive national coalition of faith-based and social justice non-profit organizations. During the fist year following the disaster, the Alliance was actively involved with advocacy and research activities to highlight the plight of Gulf Coast residents and the weak federal response to the disaster.
