In this project, funded by Public Interest Projects, the Institute is assessing the context and content of current efforts to build alliances between immigrants and African Americans in the United States. At the heart of this project is the effort to identify different models of effective alliances defined especially with respect to alliances that build long-term relationships of trust and mutual support between African Americans and immigrants; build grassroots power that can be deployed toward a variety of economic and social justice goals; and seek to generate concrete policy or practical gains for all stakeholders. More information coming soon.
The Institute also serves on the Steering Committee for the Which Way Forward initiative, launched in 2005 by the Center for New Community. Spurred by the recent sharp growth in anti-immigrant rhetoric and activity, the project seeks to initiate and promote principled education, organizing, and communication efforts between and among African American and immigrant communities. These efforts recognize the historical impact of racism, recognize and oppose present day structural racism, and expand human rights for all in the United States.
