In Nebraska, Connerly’s NCRI (Nebraska Civil Rights Initiative) language was filed in August 2007. NCRI filed 167,000 signatures with the Secretary of State on July 3, 2008. The Secretary of State verified the signatures and announced on August 22, 2008 that the initiative had gathered the number of signatures required.
Nebraskans United, the coalition that has come together in support of affirmative action, has filed a lawsuit in each of Nebraska’s 93 counties challenging the signature collections as fraudulent. The coalition has also filed a ballot title challenge to the Attorney General’s proposed ballot title.
Legislative Resolution 233CA, which proposed the same amendment to the Constitution as the Connerly initiative, was introduced into the Nebraska legislature by Senator Mark Christensen. Many people and organizations came together to oppose this legislative proposal, and the Senator later withdrew the resolution, claiming he would lose support for other legislation.
