In Colorado, Connerly’s CCRI (Colorado Civil Rights Initiative) language was filed in April 2007. Signatures were collected and submitted to the Secretary of State in March 2008. On March 24, 2008, the Secretary found the results of its random signature sample conclusive, ruled the petition sufficient, and designated the measure “Amendment 46”.

A local activist group named Vote No on 46 has filed a complaint regarding CCRI’s signatures; the group has challenged more than 69,000 of the signatures on various grounds. On July 7, 2008, a Denver District Court agreed for a court to review the Secretary of State’s random signature sample to determine whether those signatures are valid.

Coloradans for Equal Opportunity have introduced an alternative initiative, Amendment 82, which will protect affirmative action. The group submitted nearly 116,000 signatures to the Secretary of State on August 4, 2008. The Secretary of State will analyze a random sample of these signatures and should announce the results within 30 days.

The Colorado Unity Coalition is heading public education efforts and focusing on building coalitions throughout the state.
