International Program Overview
The Kirwan Institute has developed an internationally oriented program to complement and expand our current focus on the United States. The overall objective of the program is to work in the cross-cutting field of marginalized groups and effective participation. In particular, we focus on issues of racialized structures that hinder marginalized communities and groups from having equitable access to jobs, education, health care, food security, housing and other basic services. Consequently, we want to assess mechanisms that can empower marginalized groups to influence political action at local, regional, national and international levels. In this context, we are also exploring strategies to manage and mitigate conflicts over language, religion, culture, ethnicity, and race. We are addressing the challenging question of how to successfully build inclusive, culturally diverse societies.
In the international program, we seek to combine scholarly research with the input of affected marginalized groups and the practical experience of grassroots organizations in the global South. In so doing, we intend to collaborate and work with institutions and organizations that operate within a similar framework to challenge marginality and advocate for social justice and inclusion within and beyond United States.
We are developing a long-term vision for this work by building on existing research related to the consequences of racial hierarchy and racialized structures in Brazil, South Africa and the United States (see john powell, “Transformative Action: A Strategy for Ending Racial Hierarchy and Achieving True Democracy” in Beyond Racism: Race and Inequality in Brazil, South Africa, and the United States, 2001). To prepare an effective plan for the development and implementation of our international program, we are focusing on prevailing issues that effect societies in the global South and marginalized groups in the global North as well.
