Film Screening/Discussion of "Dadaab: A Somali Struggle" presented by Tariq Tarey

1:00-2:30pm at the Hale Black Cultural Center Room 100-A

Description: “Dadaab: A Somali Struggle” is a 12 minute documentary examining the conditions of this refugee camp in North Eastern Kenya. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has declared Somalia to be the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. It has also declared Dadaab to be the largest refugee camp in the world. Dadaab was designed to house 90,000 refugees. It is now home to 290,000 people, primarily Somalis. This film examines the ability of the UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations to fulfill basic needs of the people it serves under these extreme conditions.

Presenter Bio: Tariq Tarey was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. Tariq is a socially-conscious artist, who has been an active and a vital member of the photographic community of Columbus, Ohio since 2001. Trained by Abdi Roble, Tariq is an accomplished photographer, who specializes in both documentary photography and studio work. Tariq’s images have been published in the Jewish Chronicle, The Columbus Post and the OSU Medical Journal. In the fall of 2006, Tariq was honored with the South Side Settlement House’s prestigious Arts Freedom Award and the Ohio Art Council’s Individual Artist Award. Tariq also applies his organizational skills to the Somali Documentary Project. As a Coordinator for the Refugee Employment Program of Jewish Family Services, Tariq oversees large grants, which improve the lives of refugees in Columbus, and he spends a lot of his time calling potential employers and finding jobs for recent Somali refugees.

November 30 - December 2, 2007
The Kirwan Institute will host a national conference entitled
"Toward a Transformative Agenda Around Race"

Transformative Agenda Conference

The conference will include a film festival:
FilmFestival

The objective of the conference will be to re-think race and racism from a structural perspective while also acting on the insight that understanding the operations of race and ethnicity does not tell us how we can effectively communicate that understanding. A critical analysis is not a communications strategy. Accordingly, in addition to elaborating the analytical framework of "structural racism," the roughly 500 conference participants will explore ways of "talking about race" that facilitate bridge-building and coalition formation across racial, ethnic and even ideological differences. The conference will also include a film festival, an acknowledgement that we must bring a range of tools to bear on the challenge of racial analysis and communications.
