Faculty Affiliate

Creating alliances with OSU faculty is critical to Kirwan’s success in accomplishing this goal. Because the nature of an interdisciplinary research institute requires diverse frameworks and approaches, the Institute is excited to draw on the wide-ranging research and scholarship of OSU faculty to help forward its mission. We envision faculty members from a broad range of perspectives—from theater and dance to biology—sharing their ideas and research on issues related to race, ethnicity, and social justice. Through our Faculty Affiliate Program, we hope to develop collaborative and meaningful relationships with which to share: knowledge, research and resources. The Kirwan Institute has created a database of organizations, institutes, and centers that are working in the areas of race, ethnicity, poverty, and social justice, for those seeking information about these subjects. Faculty affiliates will have access to this and other databases that are developed at the Institute. Affiliate members will also be able to share their expertise with an array of researchers and scholars at the Institute on a variety of issues concerning race and ethnicity. The Institute may also offer the services of GIS experts to affiliated faculty members whose research and interests are closely aligned with current Kirwan projects.

The Kirwan Institute firmly believes that affiliate members will serve an important role in helping the Institute sustain and advance its mission. All affiliated faculty are asked to commit to the following activity:

  • Participate in at least one Kirwan event each year.
  • Mentor a junior faculty, post-doctoral student, or research associate/assistant for one year (at least six hours per academic term) in an area consistent with the Kirwan mission.
  • Present a relevant aspect of their work to Kirwan staff or share a written piece of their work to be placed in the Kirwan newsletter or on the Kirwan website.
  • For more information about the faculty affiliate program, please contact Ming Trammel at trammel.2@osu.edu.

Senior Faculty Fellows

The Kirwan Institute Senior Faculty Fellows Program is intended to capture the insight and intellectual energy of senior faculty at OSU. The principal goals of this program are as follows:

  • Advance the research and scholarship on race, ethnicity and relevant intersections.
  • Support research and scholarship projects that enhance the ongoing work of the Kirwan Institute.
  • Create and energize collaborations that will continue beyond the fellowship experience.
  • Stimulate cross-disciplinary research and scholarship at the University.
  • Provide short-term opportunities for senior faculty to engage in research with full or partial relief from the added responsibility of teaching.
  • Support faculty in developing new pedagogy around race, ethnicity and social justice.
  • Expose OSU faculty and the Kirwan Institute staff to new areas of research and scholarship.
  • Build a cadre of senior faculty who can serve in an advisory capacity (either formally or informally) with the Institute on research and scholarship.

As of October 2007, two Faculty Fellows have been named:

  • Sharon Davies, Professor, Moritz College of Law
  • Charles Hancock, Professor and Associate Dean for Diversity, Urban, International/Global Affairs, College of Education and Human Ecology
