James holds a joint appointment with the Kirwan Institute and the College of Education and Human Ecology where he is an Associate Professor in Counselor Education and Coordinator of the School of Counseling Program Track. He also has a faculty affiliation with the Ohio Collaborative and The John Glenn Institute at The Ohio State University. James received his B.A. in English Education from Delaware State University and earned both his M.A.Ed. and Ph.D. in Counselor Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His research agenda focuses on the following themes:  1) influence of educational professionals on students of color; 2) socio-cultural, familial, school, and community factors that influence academic outcomes for African American students in K-16; 3) recruitment and retention of students of color—particularly African Americans—in K-12 gifted education programs and college programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); and 4) the social, emotional, and psychological consequences of racial oppression for African American males and other people of color.
